One of my young friends wrote this

My journey in Light and Shade

It was this summer vacation days of 2002 when I was running pilar to post after my graduation to begin a new episode in my career, the idea of photography sneaked into my thought. With a decision to be a part of the Media fraternity and a failure in IIMC entrance test it was really high time then to begin something meaningful with future prospect. The pressure was mounting as all my friends had already ventured out on their next career move. Why, I don't know, but while spending an idle summer evening on a resting boat on the banks of picturesque Chilika lake, the idea to pursue photography clicked my thought and what followed later was a short term course in photography.
Today after long six years with many sessions on photography as a part of my journalism courses and handling of few SLR cameras perhaps it is the time to look back and pay my gratitude to all those people who led my way into this beautiful world of lights, shades and a Flash.
I got a chance to have an independent handling of camera way back in 1997 while outing with family in a summer vacation just after completing school. It was a normal Yashica fixed length aim and shoot camera. But the result was disastrous as I had not loaded the film properly. My first formal introduction to a Single Lens Reflex Camera (SLR) began when I joined for a certificate course in photography in Bhubaneswar. The man behind this was Mr Ghani Zaman who is still very much involved in photography as a professional lensman and instructor. With international awards and collaborations this seasoned photographer from the Chitrabani, Calcutta is still my ultimate guide. If this man taught me the basics of camera, developing a film and technicalities of lighting Mr P K Sinha, guided me into finer nuances of photography be it the perspective or colour temperature or various shades of lighting-everything was spoonfed to me.
My first assignment on an 52mm normal Lens SLR camera will be memorable for me because of the output I produced. Out of 36 exposed framed I could only produce 9 good frames. Definitely it was not a success story to begin with but for a dumb like me it was quite an achievement. Then many films and many hours in darkroom kept me engaged. Still today I’m fascinated with capturing an image in my camera but surely not an SLR but a compact digital camera.
Over years I’ve exposed many films, produced disastrous results, confronted my teachers in the journalism classrooms with my silly doubts, broken a SLR, lost a FUJICA STX 1N 52mm – but finally I’ve learnt all these years. Learnt a lot about subjects, perspective, exposure, lighting and many more technicalities.
I’m now in absolute love with images, colours and lights. Definitely it’s just a beginning and hopefully I would have an unint
